The centre of Baden-Baden’s cultural life and one of the great performance venues in Europe, the Festspielhaus offers visitors exclusive live concerts. The hall is the centre of the festival, with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and the world’s most important soloists all appearing there regularly, a rarity for a city of this size, but one which has been recognised by the orchestra’s acoustic quality, acknowledged by the artists and orchestras who perform there as one of the finest halls in the world. Since 1824, the Casino Baden-Baden has operated in the Kurhaus and is the oldest of all the casinos in Germany. It was the most beautiful casino that Marlene Dietrich had ever seen, and Dostoevsky lost his fortune here, and wrote The Gambler in the wake. One of Baden’s most characteristic experiences, and one that still has resonance today.
Outside of the city, the Black Forest wine estates of the Ortenau wine growing region (one of the best and least-known wine lands in Germany) are 30 minutes by car, with Pinot Noir and Riesling of outstanding quality, produced from volcanic and granite soils. Since 1922, the Café König on the Lichtentaler Allee has been cooking Black Forest gateau and making pastry work of quality and authenticity and has become a reference point and not just a local institution.

The light illuminated the tree-lined promenade, known as the Lichtentaler Allee, which leads along the Oos River through the city center, providing the most thought-out retail environment in Baden-Baden. The streets surrounding it, especially the Sophienstrasse and the Gernsbacher Strasse, have a variety of world-class jewellers, antique shops and premium stores. Those seeking the most unique products of this region can obtain Black Forest traditional watches (higher and more classical varieties produced by the workshops of Furtwangen are not sold on the open market but by a few special dealers by appointment only).
