So, last October, they held their first international sand polo event at a manor called Singureni. I mean, Romania doing polo? Sounded weird, honestly. However, over 2,800 people showed up, which nobody had seen coming. Arena Singureni Manor Polo Cup, October 11-13, 2024. It was the first time Romania ever did anything like this.
The woman behind it is Cristina Roșu – she started this Singureni Polo Sports Club thing and somehow got World Polo involved. Plus, Reto Gaudenzi from the St. Moritz snow polo helped out. What caught me off guard was how it didn’t feel fake. Most new tournaments feel like someone’s trying too hard, but this just… worked.
Singureni Manor: Actually Worth the Trip
You drive approximately 40 km from Bucharest. While you’re going through all this countryside, you feel like no one has touched it since the 1800s. Then boom – Singureni Manor appears.
700 hectares of forest. Massive oak trees and acacia, too. Some of these trees are probably older than our ancestors. Oh, and they got into the MICHELIN Guide, which makes sense once you see the place.
Their polo setup, though – that’s where they got smart. Built a proper arena just for sand polo. Didn’t try to convert some field or whatever. And they put it right in the forest, so you’ve got these huge old trees all around creating this natural bowl effect. When they play matches in late afternoon, the light coming through the branches is just insane.
Best part? They didn’t go all in with the corporate world. No giant sponsor tents blocking your view. No fake VIP areas. Just polo in a place that actually makes sense for polo.
Staff there get it too. They know what you need before you ask, but they’re not hovering around making you uncomfortable. They remember stuff without being weird about it. Like staying at Le Bristol, except you’re in rural Romania, which honestly I wasn’t expecting.
The Competition and Who Actually Comes
Players know their stuff. Arena polo’s totally different from regular field polo – way more technical because you don’t have all that space to work with. These weren’t exhibition games for tourists either. Real matches with real stakes. The kind of intensity that reminds you why polo’s actually exciting when it’s done right.
But here’s what got interesting – the crowd.
A mix of Europeans who made the trip specifically for this, plus Romanians who were genuinely curious. Not the usual suspects trying to be seen at polo events. Arena format means everyone’s close enough to hear everything – horses breathing hard, players calling plays, all of it. Between chukkers, people just started talking naturally.
When people aren’t performing for each other, they say different things. More honest stuff. Had some really good conversations over those three days. Not networking drama, but actual connections with interesting people.

Evenings are about the food. Chef Alexandru Dumitru gets everything from the estate or local producers he knows personally. His whole thing is “utmost respect for nature and life” through cooking that shows off what the forest and land can do. Sounds pretentious, but the food’s actually incredible.
Between matches, some people explore Romanian stuff that most tourists never see. These painted monasteries in Moldavia are apparently amazing examples of medieval art, but nobody goes there. Saxon villages in Transylvania with actual medieval buildings, not tourist recreations. Local wineries are making wine that never leaves Romania.
